Europe holds a special place on the bucket list of every travel enthusiast, and last winter, I had the opportunity to fulfill that dream. The entire experience was incredible, etched in my memory forever. From the captivating landscapes and historical cityscapes to the scenic train ride through the majestic Alps, the sub-zero temperatures, native Christmas celebrations, and delicious local pastries, every moment was spectacular.

Whether it was cruising through the canals of Amsterdam, revelling in the tranquility of the Bavarian Alps, or strolling through the streets lit up with Christmas lights, photographer Prabanchan Ramesh captured the beauty of a European winter and 

1. Tulips of Amsterdam

Tulips are a symbol of the Netherlands, with Amsterdam hosting annual festivals and featuring iconic spots like the floating flower market.

What not to miss:
  • Keukenhof Gardens (seasonal tulip fields, March–May)
  • Bloemenmarkt (floating flower market)
  • Tulip festivals and themed exhibits around the city

Good to know:
  • Peak tulip season is short, so plan dates carefully
  • Many “tulip fields” are outside Amsterdam, so book day trips!
  • Arrive early morning to avoid crowds



2. Zugspitze, Highest peak in Germany

Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany, standing at 2,962 meters above sea level. Located in the Bavarian Alps near the border with Austria, it is a popular destination for skiing, hiking, and mountaineering. The summit is accessible by cable car and cogwheel train from the foothills.

Top experiences:
  • Cable car ride to the summit for panoramic views
  • Standing on the Germany–Austria border viewpoint
  • Visit the glacier area and snow activities (seasonal)

Travel tips:
  • Weather changes fast, so carry layers and gloves
  • Book tickets for the cable car in advance during peak months
  • Sunrise and sunset offer the best photography moments!



3. River Cruise in Amsterdam

Amsterdam river cruises take visitors through the city’s iconic canals, offering views of charming bridges, historic buildings, and vibrant neighborhoods.

What not to miss:
  • Evening canal cruise with illuminated bridges
  • Passing by Anne Frank House, Skinny Bridge, and gabled houses
  • Audio-guided history commentary onboard

Insider tips:
  • Choose a smaller boat for better views and less crowd
  • Winter cruises feel cozy, with blankets and hot drinks onboard
  • Sit near the window for the best view!

4. Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a picturesque town in the Bavarian Alps, Germany, renowned for its stunning alpine beauty, with the majestic Zugspitze mountain towering above the town. It serves as a gateway to the region’s stunning landscapes and also as the starting point to the scenic Zugspitze Railway.

Must-see highlights:
  • Zugspitze Railway starting point
  • Partnach Gorge (beautiful hiking walk)
  • Classic alpine town streets with cafés and murals

Good to know:
  • Great base for skiing in winter and hiking in summer
  • Public transport connects easily to Zugspitze attractions
  • Book accommodation early during ski season

5. Christmas Decorations

Europe is famous for its enchanting Christmas decorations, with cities like Innsbruck, Munich featuring stunning lights, festive markets, and beautifully adorned streets and squares, creating a magical holiday atmosphere.

Best festive experiences:
  • Innsbruck Christmas Market with mountain backdrop
  • Munich’s Marienplatz market and light displays
  • Street performances, mulled wine stalls, handmade crafts

Planning tips:
  • Markets get crowded, so visit during weekdays or early evening
  • Dress warm as temperatures drop quickly at night
  • Many stalls accept cash only

6. The Atomium

The Atomium in Brussels is an iconic structure, representing an iron atom, with nine spheres connected by tubes. To travel between the spheres, visitors use elevators and staircases and the highest sphere contains a restaurant, offering visitors a chance to dine while enjoying the scenic views.

What not to miss:
  • Panoramic viewing deck from the top sphere
  • Exhibitions about architecture, science, and design
  • Dining at the restaurant with skyline views

Visitor tips:
  • Buy skip-the-line tickets during weekends/holidays
  • Combine Atomium with Mini-Europe (right next door)
  • Elevators are fast, but stairs connect some sections, so wear comfy shoes

As the saying goes, “A beautiful place is not just a destination, but a place that stays with you long after you leave,” and Europe reflects every bit of it.
