The journey begins before sunrise.

In Brazil’s northeastern state of Maranhão, the journey to Lençóis Maranhenses often begins in São Luís, the coastal capital known for its old historic centre, tiled colonial buildings and humid Atlantic air. From there, travellers head towards Santo Amaro, a small gateway town on the edge of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.

The road to Santo Amaro takes hours, but this is not the kind of place that reveals itself quickly. Before the dunes arrive, there are villages, sandy stretches, quiet roads and the feeling of moving further away from the familiar. Lençóis Maranhenses makes you earn the first glimpse.

The Edge of Another World

Santo Amaro is small, sandy and unpolished, with horses and goats moving through village-like streets. Proper road access came only recently, so the town still feels remote and untouched.

From here, the journey into the national park continues by 4×4, moving through sand, dust and patches of green. Then, almost suddenly, the trees open and a pale white dune rises ahead.

You climb it slowly, feet sinking into the sand. For a moment, all you see is white.

Then you reach the top, and there it is.

A Desert Full of Water

An endless sea of white dunes stretches into the horizon, with rainwater lagoons resting between them like pieces of sky. Blue, green, silver and still, the landscape feels almost unreal. It looks like a desert, but it is full of water.

During the rains, water collects between the dunes and forms natural freshwater lagoons. By June to August, Lençóis Maranhenses is usually at its most beautiful: bright, full and almost impossible to believe.

The experience is simple. Walk barefoot on warm sand, choose a lagoon and float. Around you, there are no buildings, traffic or city noise. Just sand, water, sky and the feeling of being very small in a very large place.

By sunset, the dunes soften, the lagoons turn mirror-like and the whole landscape begins to glow. Some destinations impress you. This one stays with you.

Three Gateways, Three Moods

Lençóis Maranhenses is explored through three main gateway towns. Barreirinhas is the most developed, Santo Amaro is quieter and closer to the dunes, and Atins has a remote, barefoot charm.

However you enter, the experience is best taken slowly: road, 4×4, dunes, lagoons and a landscape that feels almost unreal.

Because somewhere in northern Brazil, the desert forgets to be dry.
