Planning to cuddle up on a cosy sofa with your partner to rewatch the romances? From Fidaa to Kumbalangi Nights, these South Indian movies have marvellously tailored romances with happy endings that leave the audience in the rhythmic beats of hope in love. If you’re looking for fairytalish romances to reignite your love, here’s the watchlist for you.

O Kadhal Kanmani (2015)

Mani Ratnam’s O Kadhal Kanmani, a Tamil romance that starred Dulquer Salman and Nithya Menon, depicts modern love. Though the movie ended with a slap on the face of carefree audiences who support living together, OK Kanmani perfectly tailored the exquisiteness and excitement of love in a playful manner as well as the importance of pursuing one’s passion while bearing the pain of separation.  The movie shows “how even temporary separation can feel the pain and impatience to unite”.

Fidaa (2017)

Fidaa, directed by Sekhar Kammula, is a tale of love-hate relationship between a village girl named Bhanu (Sai Pallavi) and Varun (Varun Tej), an NRI student from USA. The movie highlights the struggles to confess, but despite the anger and fights fuelled by the eclipsed feelings, the lovers eventually unite. Unlike other typical romances, in this movie, it is the hero who sacrifices his dream life in the USA to settle with Bhanu to lead a village life.

Kumbalangi Nights (2019)

Kumbalangi Nights directed by Madhu C. Narayanan is another fairytalish romance to rewatch this Valentine’s Day. The movie revolves around the stories of Bobby and Baby who struggle to unite because of Bobby’s wretched background, as well as the lives of four brothers who gradually bond despite the troubles of living in a debilitated house. The movie ended happily with Bobby and Baby Mol getting married while the family of Bobby bid farewell to the debilitation that haunted them.

Geetha Govindam (2018)

Geetha Govindam is a feel-good romance by Parasuram that you can watch while sipping the evening coffee with your significant other. The movie highlights “how the lack of proper communication and confession can fuel misunderstandings”. The hero’s reluctance to marry Geetha even though he loved her dearly (due to misunderstandings) shows the importance of considering a healthy relationship where the love is equally reciprocated. But despite all the troubles, the movie ended happily with Vijay realising Geetha’s love and getting married to her.
